At the interferenze festival 2006 (Italy), the chef Philipp Furtenbach and two musicians Kassian and Ulrich Troyer explored the relationship between local food and its associated sounds collected from the environs. After returning, the three chose to continue their collaboration and to develop a tool they have dubbed VERDICHTUNGSMASCHINE (CONCENTRATION MACHINE). To realize this end, throughout 2007 Kassian & Ulrich programmed a computer-based and sensor-driven application in which sounds are collected by microphones and processed in real-time while these acoustic snapshots further feed the memory section of the machine. Simultaneously, various sensors (registering temperature, movement & light ) reach out like tentacles and grab information from the surrounding environment directly affecting the sonic part of the performance. The machine was tested for the first time in august 2007 at a farm in Prigglitz.
